The Street Crime Unit investigates Break and
Enters, auto thefts, and various other crimes such as street-level drug
enforcement, prostitution enforcement, and monitoring. They
maintain a pictorial file to assist Uniform personnel in identifying
prostitutes, and use other investigative techniques that identify
criminals and reveal patterns. Street Crime Unit Detectives
monitor trends of Break and Enters, auto thefts, and review pawn
shop/second-hand store sheets for stolen property and transactions with
known criminals. By identifying such trends and patterns, officers
are better able to determine where an enhanced police presence is
required, and are thereby better able to arrest criminals while
committing crimes or attempting to sell the proceeds of their crimes.
Members of the Street Crime Unit liaise
with school/youth officers and deal with youth and gang problems as they
arise. They also liaise with Probation and Parole offices and stay
current with offenders released into the community or half-way houses,
liaise with other police agencies, and assist Immigration
officers in locating and arresting wanted persons.
