Highlights of the Firearms Act

You Must Have a Licence by January 1, 2001

  • By January 1, 2001, all gun owners must have a firearms licence to legally possess or acquire a firearm in Canada, including visitors to Canada.

 

What is a Firearms Licence?

  • On January 1, 2001, you must have one of the following three firearms licences to be a lawful gun owner
  1. A valid Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC)
  2. You must apply for and get a new "Possession Only" licence by January 1, 2001.  (No safety course / Test requirement)
  3. You must apply for and get a new "Possession and Acquisition" licence by January 1, 2001.  (Safety course / Test requirement)
  • NOTE:  Under the new law, when your FAC expires, you must already have one of the new licences
  • Firearms licences must be renewed every five years
  • Applications are available at over 7000 postal outlets across Canada and through the Canadian Firearms Centre or by calling at: 1-800-731-4000
