The shelters provide crisis intervention for female victims of physical, sexual or emotional abuse, with or without children. Free emergency transportation is available to a safe, homelike setting that includes all meals, emergency clothing and personal needs to women in crisis. One to One and Group counselling is available, as is counselling for children. The shelters also provide advocacy and court accompaniment and support in both the Criminal and Family Court systems. Other services include; public education, support groups and volunteer training.

INDIVIDUAL VISITS CAN BE ARRANGED FOR WOMEN WHO DO NOT WISH TO STAY IN THE SHELTER BUT WHO REQUIRE HELP

NIAGARA VICTIM CRISIS SUPPORT SERVICE (NVCSS )

The NVCSS is a dynamic organization whose dedicated volunteers respond to referral from Niagara Regional Emergency Services by offering immediate, vital, short term, confidential support to the ever changing, needs of victims.

Crisis assistance is provided by specially trained crisis intervenors who work in cooperation with Niagara Region’s Emergency Services personnel, 24/7/365.

Outreach is initiated after receipt of Police, Fire or Medical Emergency staff requests, or through community services referrals.

NVCSS is committed to:

  • Lessening the trauma suffered by victims

  • Helping victims cope with the impact of crime or tragic circumstances

  • Assisting victims to access effective community support services

NVCSS manages the DVERS and SUPPORT LINK PROGRAMS, for people at extreme risk of violence that includes safety planning, emergency cell phones, residential alarms and ongoing counselling in an effort to reduce the likelihood of re-victimization. Clients’ well being is monitored regularly.

Domestic Violence Emergency Response System (DVERS) provides personal alarms to those at high risk of domestic violence and stalking.  This program is in partnership with the shelters for abused women and the Niagara Regional Police Service.  ADT Alarm Services of Canada provides, installs, monitors and services alarms for free.

SupportLink is a program to assist those at risk of violence and stalking by providing them with a cellular phone programmed to dial 911.  This program is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General.

 

VICTIM WITNESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (VWAP )

The goal of VWAP is to enhance victims and witnesses understanding of, and participation in, the Criminal Justice System.

It serves people who are involved within a judicial process after being victimized by a crime. Outreach provides information about the Criminal and Family Court systems, including;

  • Courtroom orientation and information about the Criminal Justice system

  • Court accompaniment ( when possible )

  • Case specific information ( court dates, Crown Attorney case assignments, sentencing, probation orders, etc )

  • Information about victim impact statements and criminal injuries compensation

  • Assisting to arrange Crown Witness interviews

  • A resource for issues affecting victims

  • Advocacy ( individual and system wide )

The Family Law Information Center ( FLIC ), is a walk-in service that assists people with legal and non-legal information on issues related to separation, divorce and other areas of family law. You will be able to speak with a customer service representative, an advice lawyer and/or a coordinator of mediation services. The FLIC also has information pamphlets, brochures, video tapes and resource material on a broad range of issues relating to separation, divorce, legal services, the court process and community resources.

This service is supported by the Ministry of the Attorney General, Legal Aid Ontario, and the Center for Family Mediation, and has been developed to assist in meeting the needs of clients, who may not yet be represented. An income/asset based fee formula is used.

Providing summary legal advice, advocacy assistance and legal representation for persons who cannot afford to pay and whose problems would not be covered under a legal aid certificate. Areas of legal advice include Family Law, Landlord Tenant, Debt problems, Workers’ Compensation, Consumer difficulties, Welfare, Family Benefits, Immigration and Employment Insurance.

A program, providing financial assistance in the form of a Legal Aid Certificate to eligible applicants who need to retain a lawyer, but cannot afford one. Certificates are provided on a payback, lien or free basis depending on eligibility.

The Niagara Child and Youth Service is a children’s mental health centre. High quality services, to strengthen the personal development of children and families are offered, so they can move toward an enhanced quality of life in the Niagara Region.

SUPERVISED VISITATION AND EXCHANGE NIAGARA…S.V.E.N at the NCYS.

The objective of S.V.E.N is to ensure the physical and psychological safety of the child(ren) while assisting families in carrying out access requirements in a neutral and supportive setting

The child(ren) can visit with a parent, free from the conflict which surrounds some separations or divorces. The non-custodial parent is able to maintain the vital link to the development of a healthy parent/child relationship.

The parent with custody has the assurance of the safety of the child(ren), during the exchange or the visit, where there has been a problem concerning alcoholism, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, relating to the former spouse.

Parents may use the service to fulfill a Court Order or by Voluntary Agreement between the parties. A ‘parent handbook’ will be given to each party at intake. Fees vary on a sliding scale according to income.
