What
is the Explosives Disposal Unit?
The Explosives Disposal Unit is a
specially trained group of officers, whose responsibilities
involve rendering explosives and explosive devices
harmless. Due to their specialized training and
experience, the EDU also provides
investigative support in cases relating to explosives and bomb
threats. In doing so, they protect the lives and property
of citizens and visitors to the Niagara Region. The
Explosives Disposal Unit not only knows how to defuse
explosives, they also know how to use them properly. The
EDU provides explosive forced entry support to the Emergency
Task Unit. Explosive entry occurs when explosives are used
to breach doors, windows, and other structures. This is
coordinated by a Tactical Police Explosives Technician.

Explosives Disposal Unit Alliance
(EDUA) The
Niagara Regional Police Service's Explosives Disposal Unit
formed a partnership with the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Police
Service (HWRPS). This partnership is called the Explosives
Disposal Unit Alliance (EDUA), and allows members from each
police service to benefit from shared resources.
By working together, this
partnership better serves both communities. It provides a
cost-savings, and improves operating efficiency. The Niagara Regional Police Service provides
at least four (4) trained explosives technicians and a training
coordinator to the EDUA. Each service is jointly responsible for the
maintenance of equipment and training of explosives
technicians.
