History
The Niagara Regional Police K9 unit was created sixteen years
ago. The first K9 team was retired Constable Ray Fowle and PSD
King. Constable Fowle had the foresight and dedication to make the
K9 Unit an integral part of policing in Niagara.
The reputation of the Niagara Regional Police K9 Unit can be
attributed to one of the original handlers, Bob Wright. His first
PSD was "Leah", the only female working dog on the unit.
She was a tough and dependable partner, definitely the boss of the
other dogs on training days.
Bob Wright had a vision and was committed to learning more
about the behaviour of the canine. He is an active instructor at
seminars and conferences throughout North America. He has taught
worldwide during his fifteen years as a handler, trainer and
canine administrator. Bob Wright is a qualified expert witness and
has authored numerous articles on the use of the Police Service
Dog.
In 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant and is
currently the commander of the Port Colborne detachment. Despite
his new position, Bob Wright continues to be a great resource for
the handlers.
