Auxiliary
officers receive extensive recruit training by members of the Niagara
Regional Police Service Training Unit. All members must undertake
ongoing training that includes evening and weekend sessions.
The training program consists of powers of arrest and duties of an
Auxiliary Police officer. Training includes First Aid, the Criminal Code, traffic/crowd
control and other related subjects.
Even upon completion of training, Auxiliary officers are still
classified as civilians and only have citizens powers of arrest.
Upon graduation, Auxiliary officers are generally assigned to work
in the districts in which they live. However, they must also be prepared to serve anywhere
within the Niagara Region in the event of an emergency call-out or special detail.
Auxiliary Officers must be prepared to contribute a minimum of 20
hours of active duty a month including in-service training meetings and requalification
for Use of Force and Firearms. There is no payment to any member for the work they do.
Auxiliary officers do not carry firearms, but they are fully trained in the use of
firearms and therefore must qualify annually. They also receive training in Use of Force,
Baton training and a driving course.
